Our mission is to get more kids on bikes. We focus on mountain biking because it is safe and fun. It gives kids an opportunity to get outside, get exercise, explore, learn about the natural world that is around us. We want all kids to be able to experience this sport, regardless of income, and as much as we are able to we try to make that happen. We want to give kids who don't do a sport a chance to try an activity that might be a good fit for them. We think screens are OK, but we like offering a fun alternative to looking at a phone. :) We want to teach all kids the basic physical skill of riding a bike for safety, fun and confidence. We want to help teach life lessons through coaching kids to ride and race mountain bikes, building strong minds, bodies and character in the process. We hope to produce lifetime riders.
Who can join and ride with the team?
Any high-schooler can join a team. Depending on which high school you attend will determine which is your team. Most of the Oakland and Piedmont teams practice at least one a week together! The Race team competes in the NorCal High School Cycling League's mountain bike race series in the late winter & early spring.
We welcome all riders! All teams are Co-ed and have riders will all skill levels practicing and racing. Check out our teams page here.
Who is Oakland Composite?
The Oakland Composite team is an official member of the NorCal High School Cycling League, which is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA). We compete in the NorCal High School Cycling League's mountain bike Spring season, and begin training in December. Our team consists of kids who live in and attend public or private high schools in Oakland and its surrounding areas who’s school does not already have a Mountain Bike Team.
Our current riders attend OSA, EBIA, College Prep, Head Royce, OMI and other east bay schools. Check out our History Here.
Who are the other school Teams in East Bay?
Oakland Tech, Skyline, Bishop O’Dowd, Alameda, Piedmont, Hayward Composite, (including Hayward, Castro Valley, San Leandro) all have teams. Check our Teams page for contact information for the above teams. Berekely and Richmond have their own separate teams.
All above teams race in the same NorCal League racing series. Many of the teams practice together and support each other at races.
What about middle schoolers?
Oakland Devo is our middle school club (grades 6-8). There are no races in the NorCal League for middle school riders at this time, so our team is somewhat unique in welcoming younger riders. Devo does fun rides, and some mountain biking field trips. Devo riders can also race junior categories in other, external races that have ‘junior’ fields. Many of our High School riders and coaches got started with our Oakland Devo Club.
